Sports Massage: What to Wear for Your Appointment

If you’re getting ready for your first sports massage, one of the most common questions is “what to wear for a sports massage?" Knowing what to bring and how to dress can make your session more comfortable, more effective, and easier for the therapist to work on the areas you need.

Here’s everything you need to know before your appointment.

What to Wear for a Sports Massage

Sports massage focuses on specific muscles and joints, so wearing the right clothing helps your therapist access the areas that need treatment while keeping you comfortable.

1. Wear Comfortable, Loose-Fitting Clothing

Things like:

  • Gym shorts

  • Leggings

  • Vest top

  • T-shirt

You may be asked to remove certain clothing items, down to your underwear, to allow the therapist to accurately assess your posture, movement, and overall body mechanics.

What to Wear for Lower-Body Treatments

If your treatment focuses on areas like:

  • Hamstrings

  • Quads

  • Calves

  • Glutes

  • IT band

  • Shins

Wear shorts or bring a pair with you.
Shorts allow the therapist to fully access the muscles without restriction.

What to Wear for Upper-Body Treatments

If you’re being treated for:

  • Back pain

  • Shoulder issues

  • Neck tension

  • Upper-body tightness

A bra (for women) and/or a vest top makes it easier to work around the shoulders and upper back.

Do You Undress for a Sports Massage?

Most people will remove certain layers depending on the area being treated, but you should only undress to a level you’re comfortable with.

You will always be:

  • Covered with towels

  • Draped professionally

  • Treated respectfully

Your privacy is always the priority.

What About Footwear?

You’ll be asked to remove your shoes, so feel free to arrive in:

  • Trainers

  • Slides / Sandals

  • Comfortable footwear

No special shoes are required.

What Not to Wear to a Sports Massage

There’s no need to worry too much about what not to wear. During your session, the therapist will simply ask you to remove any clothing that restricts their ability to observe your posture or movement. If any clothing is deemed inappropriate for the assessment or treatment, you will be asked to remove or adjust it to ensure a comfortable and professional environment.

Extra Tips for Your Appointment

  • Bring a hair tie if you have long hair (helps with neck/back treatment).

  • Avoid heavy meals right before your session.

  • Stay hydrated: massage works better when muscles aren’t dehydrated.

  • Please communicate: any pain or discomfort during your session. Some treatments may naturally involve a degree of discomfort, as firm pressure is often necessary, but your therapist will always work within your tolerance and adjust as needed.
